willy tjungurrayi

Born at Patjantja in the area Wirrinkarra(Lake Mackay). When Willy was a young man he elected to stay and live in the bush when his family moved to Hassts Bluff in the 50's. Willy is the brother of the well known artist George Ward Tjugurrayi. In 1976 Willy moved to Papunya and started paining with Papunya Tula Artist.

Willy paints designs associated with the sacred and secret ceremonies of the Tingari Cycle. These stories recount the ancient tales of the tingari people, an important group of mythical elders who travelled over vast stretches of the country back in creation time, performing rituals and imparting their knowledge to young initiates.

Willy's work is highly sought after and is held in many major private and public collections.
